Elizabeth Cavanaugh and Patrick Gaffney
The 1850 census of Ithaca, New York, Tompkins County, shows
Patrick and Elizabeth Gaffney and their two children. Bridget was
born in Ireland, and Bartholomew was born in New York State on
February 13, 1849. Patrick and Elizabeth came to America around
1848.
Family members talked of a third child named Michael.
Grandmother and Grandfather Gaffney told about Michael working in
the mine at age 11. Young children would be taken into the mine
to pick slate from the coal. Mine officials always sent canaries
into the mine to determine if harmful gasses were present. On this
day, due to negligence, the canaries were not sent in ahead and the
boys perished.
It is believed that Bridget married and lived in Scranton,
Pennsylvania. In an old Bible, the name Patrick Burnett appears
which may be her husband's name. Bridget, sister of Bartholomew
Gaffney, died giving birth to her first child, and the baby also
died.
We know that Elizabeth Cavanaugh Gaffney passed away in the
early 1860's. After the death of his wife, Patrick Gaffney
enlisted in the Union Army on May 21, 1864 in Scranton,
Pennsylvania. It is said that he took his children, Bridget and
Bartholomew, to a priest in New York for him to take care of them.
Military records indicate Patrick was 5'7" tall. He had blue
eyes, light hair and a fair complexion. He was in the 5th
Artillery, Company E, and served at Fort Barrancas, Florida as a
private. He was discharged on May 27, 1867.
It is said that when he got out of the service, he went back
to New York and got his children from his priest friend. Then, he
returned to Scranton. In later years he lived with his son,
Bartholomew, and daughter-in-law, Mary McNally Gaffney. He
probably died in Scranton before they moved to Nebraska.
