George Edward Reinhardt
As he grew older, George Edward loved baseball. He became a
pitcher for St. Joseph, Missouri semi-pro baseball team. St. Joe
was part of the Western League. He played baseball in the 1890's.
George was 5'11" tall; had red hair; and was right-handed.
An informant at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Copperstown, New York
said, "It was not considered acceptable by many families to have
their son play baseball". George Edward's daughter, Dorothy
Reinhardt Wendelin, who lives in Denver says, "My Dad was the black
sheep of the family".
George Edward Reinhardt married Velma Viola Beeman in Cuming
County in 1897. They had three children:
In 1906 George married Pearl Edna Pebworth at Sioux City,
Iowa. For 2 or 3 years, George Edward played baseball for a team
in Sioux City. It is said that George's brother, Jacob, "Jake" of
Omaha influenced him to become a glazier. Jake worked for
Pittsburgh Glass Company in Omaha as a salesman.
By 1909 George Edward and Pearl were living in Denver. They
had three children during their marriage:
In the 1930's he had a serious injury when he slid beneath a
truck and the wheels ran over him. His jaw, arm and all the ribs
on one side of his chest were broken. He also had a serious leg
fracture. George was in St. Joseph Hospital in Denver for four
months. He was on crutches for a while and then used a leg brace.
He did not have much contact with his family in Nebraska. His
daughter, Dorothy, remembers how he wept when he got a letter from
one of his daughters by his previous marriage. His daughters
remember him as a dependable man.
George Edward Reinhardt died March 22, 1954 at age 80. He is
buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
