Jacob Reinhardt
Jacob was born February 19, 1828. He was 19 years old at the
time he immigrated to the United States. Upon his arrival he came
to Muscatine, Iowa. He recorded this trip and several important
events in German on a page in his Bible. I
In June of 1850, he married Martha Mark in Muscatine. The
couple is recorded living in the town of Muscatine on the 1850
census. There are no other Reinhardt's listed as living in
Muscatine County at that time. One could surmise Jacob came to the
U.S. alone or that his family settled in another place.
The family moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska in August of 1868.
They lived there just four months.
In 1868 Jacob applied for a homestead in Lancaster County,
Nebraska. It was in Centerville Precinct near the Old Mormon
Trail. The family moved to the homestead. The 1870 census lists
Jacob as a farmer; Martha as a housekeeper; and William as working
on the farm. The other children at home were: Louisa, Henry,
Jacob and Frederick. Two sons, Louis C. and George Edward were
born later. On December 20, 1875 the final homestead papers were
issued to Jacob Reinhardt by President Ulysses S. Grant. It was
necessary to live on a homestead for 5 years and make improvements
before getting final papers.
In June of 1877, Jacob bought 80 acres of land in Cuming
County. At this time Jacob went into partnership with J, C.
Wunderlich in a meat market, the first in David City.
Later he sold out and went into general merchandise trade with
F. W. Paddock. He continued in this business until January of
1880.
In 1880 Jacob started Reinhardt and Son Mercantile with his
son, John William Reinhardt. The store was on the east side of the
town square. It was the third building from the south end of the
block. The store faced west. There was a large curved stone and
concrete sign attached to the top of the building which said,
"REINHARDT". The building still stands but the sign was removed
a few years ago.
Margaret Reinhardt of Ogallala, Nebraska has a token bearing
the inscription, "REINHARDT AND SON, DEALER IN GENERAL MERCHANDISE,
DAVID CITY, NEB.", which was given to customers. The token was
worth 25 cents and could be traded in on merchandise. The store
sold everything--clothing, dishes, and tools. Jacob Reinhardt's
obituary states, " In business dealings he was known to be
scrupulously honest in every respect. It was a pleasure to be a
patron of his". Jacob retired from the mercantile business in
1895.
Jacob was a member of the Methodist Church for 65 years. He
joined the German Methodist Church in Muscatine. When he arrived
in David City, he joined the English Methodist Church.
Mr. Reinhardt died November 7, 1915. He was 87 years old.
He was buried next to his wife in the David City Cemetery.
Jacob was a pioneer in Lancaster and Cuming County. He is
listed in History of Nebraska, page 460.
