Rotherham Relatives
Pfc. Arthur Rotherham was killed in World War I. He was the son of Edward and Sarah Rotherham, grandson of Catherine Powers and Michael Rotherham. Arthur was born in Lindsay, NE, March 20, 1893. In April of 1917 he enlisted in the army at St. Louis Missouri, he was stationed at Jefferson Barraks, MO. Later he was transferred to Douglas, AZ where he received most of his training. He landed in France, June 27, 1917. He was gassed while on duty at the front on May 3, 1918. After returning to duty he was killed while operating a machine gun on July 18, 1918. Arthur's mother was the first Gold Star Mother in the Lindsay area. She was given a trip to France to see her son's grave. He was buried at Oise-Aisne, France, an American Cemetery, fourteen miles from Chateau Thierry.


A 1,000 mile horse race was held from Chadron, Nebraska to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. The race started at 5:30 p.m. June 13. Each contestant was allowed two horses--one to ride, one to follow. The winner, John Barry, completed the ride in 13 days, 16 hours, John did not receive the $1,000 prize. He was disqualified for scouting his route before the race began,

John's horse was named Poison. John was the husband of Mary Jane Rotherham, daughter of Catherine Powers and Michael Rotherham.


Rita Rotherham became Sister Marian of the Sister of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity and was instrumental in establishing the Marycrest House of Prayer in Denver. She also prepared an extensive Rotherham family history. Sister Marian now lives in Alliance. The family history is at the home of Lucille Rotherham, 1824 Vicki Lane, Norfolk, Nebraska, 68701. Rita and Lucille are granddaughters of Catherine Powers and Michael Rotherham. Their Father is Michael Rotherham.


Beverly Jean Rotherham, great-granddaughter of Catherine Powers and Michael Rotherham, daughter of James Bernard Rotherham and Matilda Bauer joined the Missionaries of Charity, the nuns of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She has ministered in Mexico City, Panama City, Lima, Peru, La Paz, Boliva and is now caring for AIDS patients at Seton House in Denver, Colorado.
